Artists work in different ways. This is how I create, which works best for me. Artists work in different ways. This is how I create, which works best for me.

Most all the work I do comes from my doodles, or little sketches and drawings I create in my sketch book. I'll draw on little scraps of paper, the back of my kid's homework papers, or even on napkins. Hey, whatever works in the moment, right? So if I find myself in a hurry to write down or sketch a quick idea, I'll use whatever I can to get it down on something. When inspired, act! From there I can either enlarge the artwork on my printer, and then use my light table to trace over that, or I can use it the size it is. Whatever is suitable to the project I'm working on at the time. Next, I either paint my art using watercolors or acrylics, or I scan it into my computer to color it and make slight digital enhancements with Photoshop. I can add text, insert it into a layout for brochures, greeting cards, web sites, or different products. I may simply print it out for my portfolio. I like working with my computer to create the finished art. Sometimes though, it's nice to sit down with brushes and paint, and do it "the old fashioned way." It's so relaxing, and I enjoy it so much that I often lose track of time! Whoops!

From a small doodle in my sketch book, to a copier, next a light table, and then to be traced and cleaned up a bit. After that the drawing is scanned into the computer where I add the colors and touch ups. So, from black and white to...

...simply smashing! Inspired by this design? You can find it in my online store by following the links to the right.
Another peek into how I work

This little sketch of a guitar-playing pig used to reside in the corner of my sketchbook. I decided to work with it a little more. First, I scanned and opened it in Adobe Illustrator CS3. (I also use Photoshop CS2 for a lot of my work) From there I traced it using Live Trace, and experimented by using different colors, textures, adding a background and text. The next step...

Tah-dahh! A lifeless doodle- now reborn! Artists have the power to do this- but only, of course, with something made of ink!
